  9. The Internet is becoming more and more popular, and unlike
  10. CompuServe and most other online services, not all parts of the
  11. the Internet have standardized on the ZIP file format.  Many
  12. Internet sites distribute files in "gzip" and Unix "compress"
  13. format (files ending in a Z) and use the old TAR (Unix Tape
  14. ARchive) format to group files.
  15.  
  16. WinZip 5.6 adds support for the Z and TAR formats.  This lets you
  17. use WinZip to work with almost all compressed files downloaded
  18. from the Internet.  WinZip 5.6 also lets you decompress files in
  19. the "Microsoft Compress" format used on the Windows 3.x
  20. distribution disks and some other Microsoft product distribution
  21. disks.  No external programs are needed for these file formats.

  23. Some notes on these new features:
  24.  
  25. - WinZip does not let you create files in these formats, but other
  26.   features (Extract, View, CheckOut) all work.
  27.  
  28. - Unlike ZIP, TAR, LZH, ARJ, and ARC files Microsoft-compressed
  29.   files and Z files (gzip/compress) contain only ONE file.
  30.  
  31. - Unlike ZIP, LZH, ARJ, and ARC files, TAR files are NEVER
  32.   compressed.

  34. - Since TAR files are often distributed in Z format (with
  35.   extensions like .TAZ and .TGZ) WinZip treats Z files containing
  36.   containing a TAR file as a special case:  WinZip offers to
  37.   decompress and open the TAR file.

  39. - There is no reliable way to determine the uncompressed size of
  40.   files in the gzip and compress format, so WinZip shows the size
  41.   as a question mark.

  43. Other minor changes since WinZip 5.5a:
  44.  
  45. - The archive's drive letter is no longer included in the WinZip
  46.   title bar.  You can get the old behavior by adding the line
  47.   DriveInTitle=1 to the [WinZip] section in your winzip(nt).ini.

  49. - A new checkbox in the Configuration dialog box determines
  50.   whether the right mouse button pops up a menu or selects listbox
  51.   entries as in earlier versions.

  53. - As in earlier versions of WinZip the default radio button in the
  54.   Extract dialog box is "Selected Files" if any files are
  55.   selected.  If you prefer the default always be "All Files" add
  56.   the line "DefaultExtractAll=1" to the [WinZip] section of your
  57.   WINZIP.INI (or your WINZIPNT.INI if you are running the Win32
  58.   version).

  60. - Conversion from long names to MS-DOS 8.3 filenames is smarter
  61.   than in previous versions:  a name like XXX.YYY.TXT is now
  62.   converted to XXXYYY.TXT rather than being truncated to XXX.YYY.
